The June 6th issue of the Austin Chronicle has three articles about the fight against Austin City's plans for noxious use of the "Webberville Tract" within our neighborhood.

The first article leads off with information about Dave and Joann Gunlock, and quotes Dave as saying: "Everything good goes west of I-35," he complains. "Everything they don't want comes east of I-35. And that's not right. We have the prisons; we have the dumps; we have the tank farms; we have low-income housing; we have halfway houses, gravel pits. ... You name it, we've got it."
It goes on to report on the history of the struggle: Concern over a landfill on the Webberville tract is not new. It's been hanging over the heads of area residents for several years - Webberville Mayor Hector Gonzales first wrote to Travis Co. Commissioner Ron Davis pleading for help in 2005. (With about 300 residents, Webberville has a history dating back to the 1850's but was only incorporated as a village in 2003.) Although the Austin City Council doesn't represent them, Webbervillians have gone to City Hall imploring Austin's government to go elsewhere for its future landfill and utility needs.
Another article reports that Claud Bramblett and Bill Kemp have located "Webber's Fort": Researcher Bill Kemp and UT anthropology professor Claud Bramblett, acting on tips from locals, went to the top of a hill on the city of Austin's property and found a stack of bricks that appears to be an ancient house foundation. This, along with a large, adjacent water cistern, form what Kemp and Bramblett believe are the remains of Webber's Fort, built around 1832, when Webber and Hector may have been the first non-native settlers in what is now Travis County.
The third article reports on what City Council Members are saying now about the landfill issue. It's important that we keep up the dialogue and communication with City Council members and County Commissioners!
MUCH thanks to all those PSNA members who attended today (Tuesday 3/18) to express their opposition at the County Commissioners Court and the associated news conference. Dave Gunlock did a great job for PSNA. Also thanks to Webberville Mayor Hector Gonzales and the many Webberville residents who so forcefully presented the facts about what a disaster the City's plans would be to our neighborhood and to Webberville.
You can see reports on TV stations' websites, and on the Austin American Statesman. In additon to the fine job of Dave Gunlock and Mayor Gonzales, Rep. Dukes and Commissioner Davis spoke forcefully in opposition to despoiling land in eastern Travis County.
Please DO continue to write, and ASK OTHERS TO WRITE (even it means writing again), to Austin City Council to express opposition to a landfill or other noxious use of this land. It's important to keep the pressure on them!
It's likely that Austin City Council will take up this issue -- perhaps on Thursday March 27 or perhaps at a later date -- it will be important for as many of us as possible to attend and express our opposition then. We'll do our best to keep you informed.
PSNA will continue to work to get the County Commissioners Court to exercise the authority it has to regulate landfills.
Again, thanks to all those who have done such a great job. We're making progress, and we will succeed!
